LAKE WOODMERE, RIVERSIDE CEMETERY

Lake Woodmere is at the Riverside Cemetery in Marshalltown. Woodmere is an obscure word which means "little lake-let." The lake started as a pond from converted swamp land in 1884. Eventually, a water fall was added along with 2 fountains. It is estimated that 50-75 people visit the pond every day to enjoy the beauty, peace and serenity. (Which I was doing with some bread crumbs for the feathered flock and a good book until “Super Moms” unloaded their SUV with 3 strollers and 4 toddlers. So much for peace and serenity!) The pond is home to swans, geese, ducks and many other ‘visitors’ stopping by on their way north and south.

Each summer Lake Woodmere is the site of Kids Fishing Day. For the largely bullhead population of the lake, worms are the bait of choice!

When the bread crumbs come out, every one heads in the same direction!
