Arrived at the RV park in Homewood KS about 1PM. It was only a 263 mile day. Averaged 13.6 mpg....no major city traffic and not much road construction. Just what I like - an uneventful trip!
Nice park......my picnic table is in the shade of my RV so it will be a nice evening outside with Li'lBit. She really does need a good brushing!!
The folks that own the park greeted me with a freshly popped bag of popcorn! What a delightful treat -- popcorn with my afternoon ice tea after hooking up the electric and, this time, the water. Still can't take a shower -- the plants in the tub make it look like the Garden of Eden!
I should be really RIPE by the time I get to Iowa!
The park is only about a block or two from the interstate -- and yes, you can hear the trucks going by but it is muffled -- not loud or irritating. Will put this park on my route back list!

GUTHRIE OKLAHOMA
Left Gatesville about 7:30 AM -- went by Gatesville Tire Co and the guys checked all of my tires and sent me down the road -- or up the road since I'm traveling north!
Did make one BIG mistake that I will NOT make tomorrow morning -- took my blood pressure meds -- shouldn't have done that! Good thing I travel hauling my own bathroom around behind me!
The eye held up quite well -- I was off the road by about 3:15 PM. Had a little mental difficulty just south of Oklahoma City maneuvering through and around those damn concete barricades they use to designate lanes in construction areas. OK -- I know -- if the semis can make it, I can make it -- but it's a nerve-racking experience with the right eye screwed up!
Then, I realized a little to late I needed to be over one lane to my left to make the ramp for I-35 -- so I just put on my blinker and moved over -- To hell with 'em if they can't take a joke! Got a few one-finger salutes!!
Nice little RV park here just south of Guthrie, Pioneer RV Park -- well, it isn't too little -- from the park map, there must be about 80 slots -- a little close together -- no picnic tables -- but nice and airy. They have a small store, propane, showers and laundry....the water is delicious! Hopefully I'll be able to stop here on the way back to TX in the fall.
I'll be in no great hurry getting out of here tomorrow -- I'll only be going about 275 miles -- will stop just south of Kansas City for the nite.

IT'S HITCH ITCH
It’s a rainy Saturday – woke up to 65 degrees which was quite a change from the 90 degree daytime, 70+ degree night time weather we have been having. Decided this was a good day to get my check lists printed and my packing materials out……Yup! I’ve got Hitch Itch!
Been in Gatesville since the first part of April. Have completed all of my medical appointments except a couple this Tuesday. The critters have been ‘vet-checked’ and are up to date on all of their shots and vaccinations. Managed to get Holly, the cat from hell, micro-chipped with a Home Again chip. After my ‘near loss’ of Li’lBit last Christmas Eve in Rockport, I decided that Holly needed her own chip. She isn’t an ‘outside’ cat – even tho she has slipped out the door a couple of times. Fortunately she has stayed close to the RV and run right back in when I opened the door. Of course, the other problem is who in their right mind would try to pick her up to read the chip number!! But we are all medically ready now to hit the road.
I really don’t relish the thought of having 2 doc appointments on Tuesday the 19th – that is the day I have to hitch up – will be heading out first this the morning of the 20th. Will stop by Gatesville Tire and let the Orville and his guys check the tires all around and then head north.
Johnnie’s son Toby will be by after work on the 19th to help me hitch up – Lee, the one that usually helps, is working out of town now….not too convenient for Mary Jane after her fall.
Didn’t get to see or spend as much time with Mary Jane as usual – she decided to take a fall and end up with a compression fracture the day before I got back – so between hospitalizations and immobility, our paths haven’t crossed much. She did get to town and took me out for a birthday lunch at the Chinese Buffet here in town…and she found a Tres Leche cake – she knows it is one of my favorites!
Eating and coffee-drinking seem to be the main stays while I’m here. When Brenda was on early shift, it was Brunch with Brenda and when she was on a later shift it was Lunch with Brenda – we have definitely eaten at all of the places here in town – and most of them more than once! Brenda is the ‘keeper’ of my mail and that is a debt to her that it will be impossible for me to repay!
Then it was afternoon coffee and Sunday dinners with Johnnie and her family. Had to fill up on lots of coffee and lots of time with Johnnie – will have to last me until I get back this way in the fall. And just catching up with her kids and their families takes some doing – grandkids ranging from high-chairs to high-school!! Always something going on. Between her husband and her sons, I manage to get most of my questions regarding mechanical and electrical things answered.
Had the opportunity to have a couple of lunch get-togethers with Andrea -- one with her husband at Double Daves Pizza for noon buffet and once with her son -- home from college -- for Whataburgers -- a Texas Tradition! Hard to believe that William is in college -- he was all involved in Pokemon as a pre-teen when I first met him!
Never have enough time to make schedules mesh and get together with lots of folks, but that’s just the way life is in today’s world. For the first time in a long time, I had lunch with Rebecca without her kids…can’t believe they are BOTH in school now – sure makes me feel old!!!
Had the opportunity to spend a couple of hours with John and Donnah Nordstrom....John and I worked together at the prison -- we are both originally from Iowa. Both John and Donnah are nurses and are on the road full-time RVing.....John is working for one of the traveling nurse associations and they are back from Arizona visiting with family here-- then headed back southwest shortly. So I'm glad our paths crossed and we got to 'play catch-up' on our visits.
My sister called to say she had made an appointment for me at the eye clinic there in Marshalltown for June 1. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that they have the “magic” cure or treatment.

Spring in Central Texas
April 1 was to have been moving day. Everything was closed up and packed on Tuesday afternoon so all that was left for Wednesday, hook-up day, was to pull in the slide - empty holding tanks - unhook the utilities - hitch up and head out.
Had a great time in Rockport and have reservations for next winter. Good friends, good seafood and lots of visiting and eating! Met some really nice RVers here in the park and made face-to-face contact with some folks I know thru an RV email list. Managed to squeeze in time to attend the Corpus Christi Bird Club -- gave a presentation on Breeders Lung -- a subject near and dear to my heart and lungs! Even won a few bird toys for Tinga from their raffle table.
Always enjoy my visits with Deryl & Elke -- they know the best places to eat! And they are my private taxi service to Corpus Christi for the bird club meetings!
The truck was fueled up on Monday – ready for the move north. Marv was going to hitch me up when he returned from morning appointments. By noon, the winds had whipped up and driving/towing was not an option at that point. But Marv, Walter and a couple others on the street came by to make sure everything was hitched up and ready to go – and I pulled into a pull-thru space at the front of the park, didn’t unhitch – just plugged in the electric for the night – hoping to wait out the winds. But, as I listened to the weather reports that evening – the next day didn’t seem promising at all.
6:30 AM Wednesday winds were about 10-12 mph and not predicted to increase much until about 10AM -- I heard that Dallas/Fort Worth was expecting winds coming from the northwest – which means I would be headed into them….so, like a good boy scout, to be prepared, I mapped out all of the Walmart parking lots along the way! Thought I could pull in behind their building for protection if needed.
Ran into a rough spell just north of LeGrange and lost one of the panes of glass from my bedroom window -- by the time I got to Gatesville, the wind had whipped in enough to pull down the day-nite shade -- and I refuse to put it back up! I worked and worked to get that thing out of there so I could restring it and could never get it free -- well, it's free now and it is staying that way -- I'll but the drapes back up!
I pulled out of Rockport about 7AM and into the RV park in Gateville TX about 2PM-- nice to be back with my central TX family! Ran into some rain and hail on the way up, wind gusting at a fairly good clip out of the northwest so I was quite stable not being hit on the side -- didn't do much for my fuel mileage, however!
All-in-all, it really was an uneventful trip -- just windy and tiring. With Fred’s help, here in the Gatesville park, I unhitched and leveled the RV. Plugged in the electric and left the rest of the hookup for Friday – I didn’t realize just how tired I was until I stopped driving – all I wanted was an ice tea and a bed!
Slept like a log until the clock on the court house started chiming and the mail truck pulled into the post office across the street and backed up to the loading dock to unload the mail – sounds I have to get used to again!
I'll be in Gatesville for about 6 weeks to catch up on coffee-drinking, gossip, taxes, license plates and safety stickers, medical appointments for me and vet checks for Holly, Li'lBit and Tinga. Have reservations in Iowa starting May 23.
It feels good to be “home” – my spring and fall home!

And How is Your Cholesterol?
Yesterday I had a wonderful day sharing good food with friends - new friends -- internet friends -- the three of us, single female RVers, are all on the same Rving email list. Since we all ended up here in Rockport TX at the same time we decided to meet for lunch - you know how dangerous it can be to meet strangers from the internet! It was a GREAT day.
And, I experienced something new to the taste buds -- Fried Avacado! Yup! You heard that right -- Fried Avacado -- the avacado is halved, pit removed, peeled, stuffed with chicken fajita meat, the halves replaced -- wrapped with cheese, rolled in crumbs and deep fried!
And How Is YOUR Cholesterol!

I've Been A Bad Girl!
OK! I'm Sorry! I've been a bad girl -- I haven't updated this blog since last fall!
My only excuse is that I'm having too much fun and just don't set down and make the blog entries.
Since I posted last fall, I've been back to Gatesville TX and had my medical appointments at Temple (TX) VA Clinic. AND -- since I lived in Gatesville for over 20 years -- I had lots of coffee-drinking with friends and catching up on gossip to do!
December brought me back to Rockport after some standard maintenance to the RV. I've been here enjoying the sun and the gulf breeze, visiting with friends -- enjoying the meetings of the Corpus Christi Bird Club -- meeting folks that are cyber-friends.....now I can put a face with the name. Eating way too much good fish and seafood.
April 1 I head back to Gatesville, with reservations at Shady Oaks in Marshalltown Iowa for May 23.
I really will try to get this thing back up and running! I got the hint when I started getting email questioning my existance!!! YES! I'm Alive! Life is Good! I've been Blessed!

Summer's Coming to an End
August came to an end with some early fall weather -- woke up on the 25th to a 47 degree morning and spent most of the day in a sweatshirt with the space heater going! By late afternoon the temps were desperately trying to make it to the 70s but failed in the attempt. Normally Iowa has some scorching days in August and September, but this has been an unusual spring and summer. Of course, my sister is happy with the cooler weather. The kids have started back to school and with classes pre-K through grade 5 in her school, hot sweaty kides are not conducive to good learnin'!
Nearly each morning I heard the flock of geese heading to the marsh which made the feel of autumn in the are much closer to reality.
Finally found a 'black box' so I can get my ol' TV ready to switch to HD. Can't say I'm really impressed. Now I keep loosing signals -- I really do dislike technology. Oh, the picture has improved, but I guess I'm just old fashioned. I still prefer my old analog 'bag phone' that never lost a call to these new digital things. Guess it's time I 'get with it' and come into the modern age....but just don't understand why we try to fix something that ain't broken!
Spent lots of time cleaning all of the little hidden spaces and corners. I had so much stuff from the truck stacked here in the RV and it needed to get back to the truck. It sure is nice having the truck home!
There is a place on the slide-out that must have a leak -- on the back wall -- by the window -- during heavy rains, I noticed the water has been running down the outside wall and window and not channeled away from the wall. I found some damp carpeting after the last rain storm but thought the window hadn't be closed securely -- that may not have been the problem. Hopefully, the RV service place will have time to get me in for a day or two to fix some stuff that was damaged during the spring high winds - the antenna for one! Also would like some of those high-rise caps over my roof vents so I can keep them open during rainy days. Just little odds and ends.
Since I hadn't been using my charcoal grill very often -- too much trouble stoking it up for one person -- I opened the wallet and bought a small eclectric grill. Have used it nearly every suuny day since! Actually, I'm using it more like an outside oven -- saves heating up the RV.
For days, I tried to locate an odor in the RV -- except for my nose, it had escaped me! Thought the dog had buried something under the chair or sofa -- but ended up to be a moldy cucumber in the fridge -- can't understand why I didn't notice it when I opened the fridge. Guess I need to clean and defrost it more frequently!
Put a phone call through to Ed and Linda at the RV park in Gatesville to make sure they saved me a space. I'm ready to go home -- emotionally ready -- not phsycally ready -- the longer I stay in one place, the more I have to pack up!! I'm getting a real good case of "hitch itch" -- 4 months in one place is too long -- I love it here -- after the weather settled down, it has been damn near perfect. But Texas is calling -- I can hear it calling my name.
As the month came to an end, the storms and winds were fewer and farther between, but I did wake up one night to the sound of wind blowing out of the west and hail pounding down on the RV. When I got up to close the windows, I noticed it wasn't raining or hailing -- it was the sound of the acorns blowing out of the trees and slamming into the top and side of the RV and truck....the joy of parking in an old oak grove!
One chilly morning I realized I had forgotten to make bread for the birds the night before -- so I opened a box of Jiffy Mix and added some beans and corn to it -- they love it spiced up with some cinnamon! The left over corn and beans became corn and bean chowder -- another advantage of the cooler weather -- good chowder and soup weather.
Since arriving in Iowa, I have become a "Culver's Addict." That is the restaurant with the "byte with a bite" sign on the door -- and I made really good use of their WiFi hotspot until I got setup with the WiFi in the park. Wednesday is fried chicken night and I always feel so miserable when I leave there! Come to think of it -- Bea and I seat out so often, I have eaten way too much on this trip. But eating out is so much fun -- no cooking, no dishes to wash! My kind of meal!!
The early hours of August 28 brought another thunder-boomer. Lost power -- lots of thunder and lightning --not much wind or rain. Did find out that there is no water in the park when the power goes out! Evidentially there isn't automatic alternative power for the well and pump. Of course, I hadn't refilled my fresh water tank after we emptied it to use the water to wash the RV. Lesson leaned!
Thank heavens I rememered to pick up Richard's gooseberries! Brenda's husband is the first (and only) person I met in Texas that knew what gooseberries were -- and liked gooseberry pie! So, I ordered a case of canned gooseberries to take home to Brenda (there are only 8 cans to a case) -- but now Brenda will have to make Richard his gooseberry pies -- at least 8 of them!
August ended with a cookout at my sister's and a Labor Day weekend cookout with Kathy and Jim.
The weather is terrific for this time of year -- but always on my mind are my friends down on the Texas Gulf Coast and hurricane season. Looks like they are starting to roll in one right after the other.
