Duct Tape was invented by Richard Drew of Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company in the 1920's. He was also instrumental in the development of Scotch Brand tape.
During WWII, a research team of the Permacell division of Johnson & Johnson developed a process to combine multiple layers of adhesive onto a polyethylene coated cloth backing improving and marketing the original concept.
