July started out at 81 degrees at wake-up! Nite time lows never got out of the upper 70s! Thought maybe I didn't get far enough north and I woke up in Texas! Stayed inside with the A/C on reading. I'm into a book by Mary Roberts Rinehart. It's 3 different stories reminds me some of Agatha Christie mysteries. They take place prior to WWII. Believe me, no one worried one bit about being “politically correct” at that time!
Saturday July 2 was not a good day for my neighbor. They left on Friday to go to southern Iowa for the holiday weekend. When I took Li'lBit out in the AM, I noticed water running (I should say gushing!) from under their trailer. Got the water shut off; I'm afraid the damage is already done. They were scheduled to leave Tuesday for a family reunion somewhere west. The park owners got ahold of them and they were back here by noon with their son-in-law to hitch up the trailer and take it back home. Hope there isn’t too much damage.
Sunday was a very pleasant days after a run of ‘scorchers.’ 70 degrees, sunny, nice breeze - Sunday is "Brunch with Bea" and I love every minute I can spend with her.
Seems everyone was out on a Holiday Weekend. 4th of July Bea and I went driving for a place open to get something to eat! Finally decided on the Pizza Ranch buffet. Can’t believe so many restaurants were closed on a holiday like this! Fireworks were set off at the fair grounds just a short distance from the RV park. Had a nice view through the trees without all of the noise!
The rain and storms held off on the 5th and Bea and I made a trip down to see the covered bridges in Madison County and do the 'tourist' thing in Winterset Iowa. Stopped and had lunch at the Northside CafĂ© on the square, real homemade pork tenderloin sandwiches and onion rings! Saw a few of the bridges, John Wayne's birthplace, a few other touristy things. Unable to get a good view of the court house as it is under reconstruction. Save that for another year. I really would like to see the inside – hear the woodwork is black walnut! Left Winterset and headed to Ankeny and the Okobogi Grill . I had a Groupon coupon so we saved $15! Great Day! I do love to "go-see-do" -- just have to go slower, see it with one eye, and do a little less! But Life Is Good!
Holly has a new playmate. She waits at the window screen every evening for her tree frog friend! They certainly are noisey little devils!
The 6th was a great day. 68 degrees, not too much humidity, sun is out, nice breeze - drinking some good coffee in my souvenier Northside Cafe coffee mug (a really heavy thick mug that keeps the coffee warm!) Laundry, hair cut and grocery day day.
I am sick and tired of stubbing my toes on the table leg of the dining booth! I’m really surprised I haven’t broken one yet. So early Thursday morning I headed out to get one of those foam swimming ‘noodles’ to wrap around the table leg. Called Bea to let her know I was in town, she had to come into town on some errands and we did brunch at Perkins before I came back home. Brunch with Bea is on Sunday NOT Thursday – I was confused for the rest of the week.
Woke up July 9th and heard them talking on the radio about the steam engine making a run from Kellog to Colfax. That’s just down the road from where I am staying. A steam engine – a real steam engine. So pack my lunch and off I go! The event was some sort of fund-raiser for the Kellogg and Colfax fire departments.
On my way down to Kellogg, I saw a series of Burma Sahve signs. I had to stop and back up to make sure that is what I saw! Not enough shoulder to pull over to get a good pic - will have to get my sister to take me out and drop me off so I can get closer to the signs.
After I left Kellogg, I headed over to Newton, the train track runs thru Newton, but I missesd the train. I did notice that there was a guy selling “Sweet corn picked today” in a parking lot. But the lot was already full of people waiting to buy some so I didn’t stop.
When I got back into Marshalltown, decided to head up the main street to see if there was corn here. And there it was - the wagon in the parking lot by the old BP station. The sweet corn is here! Bought a dozen ears.
Sunday July 10 I'm back on track - It's SUNDAY and I had Brunch with Bea -- no more confusion from having brunch on Thursday! Planned on a simple trip to Hardee's - electricity out in town. Went to LeGrand (BIG breakfasts) - so full you couldn't get into the parking lot. Ended up at the Mesqwaki Casino for their Brunch – ate too much and came home feeling miserable!! And it is way to hot and humid for me to take my lungs outside so it was definitely an inside kinda day!
